Happy New Year and Happy Valentine’s Day to all of our Growing Tree families! We can’t believe we’re already halfway through the school year! The children are having so much fun making their Valentine projects: The Two’s love covering their art (and themselves!) with lots of stamps and glitter – The Two’s motto: More is better! The Three’s like using “all the Valentine colors” and are very creative when decorating with crayons and stickers. The Pre-K kids are becoming experts at cutting out hearts and writing the word “LOVE”, and you never know what is going to happen when the T-K kids drink their “love potion”! Of course, all the classes love their Valentine exchange! We have many children with allergies so, PLEASE, NO CANDY in your valentine cards!

Our Valentine’s Party is Saturday, February 11 from 10:00-11:00. Lots of activities for the children and siblings! Cookie decorating, card making, face painting, necklace lacing and, of course, the family photo are all on tap for the big event! Hopefully, you will all be able to join us!

REGISTRATION INFORMATION!

Registration forms (2012 – 2013 school year) for all currently enrolled families and siblings (of course!) will be in cubbies the week of February 20th. They can be returned beginning Monday, March 5th at 8:00 a.m.. No registration forms will be accepted prior to March 5th.

To alleviate confusion and frustration, we have established a time line and procedure for the next school year.

March 5-9 2012 - all currently enrolled families and siblings register.

March 12-16 2012 – all currently registered children and those on our active waiting list are placed into age- appropriate class.

Children currently in our younger two’s program will move up to either the older two’s or the younger three’s, depending on their birthdate. Generally, all other classes move as a group to the next age appropriate room.

Beginning March 19-23 2012 - any available spaces will be offered to new families. Enrollment applications may be brought to the school and spaces will be filled on a first come basis starting the morning of the 19th at 8 am.

Some points to remember:

- All children and siblings are guaranteed spaces in September.

- If you want specific days, turn your form in sooner rather than later!

- Please select your days carefully. We ask that you keep, for September, thenumber of days you initially signed up for.

- If you are thinking about the T-K program, please sign your child up for Kindergarten as well. Children

change and grow so much between March and August. You may opt for Kindergarten at that time!

As we near the end of the school year, the children take “fieldtrips” to the class into which they will be graduating. They get to meet the teachers, and the “big” kids show them all the great stuff in their classroom!

Wow! Where does the time go?!

Welcome back! The children in our class have been busy little bees! This month we have been learning about winter animals! During circle time we sang “Seals on the Bus” and “Winter is Coming Soon”. We learned about seals, polar bears and penguins. Alexis said “Polar bears don’t sleep in winter; they go outside to play games until they get tired.” Ryan said “Seals eat fish, keep warm wearing a heavy jacket!” Samantha said “I like seals, they play in the water!” Sam V. said “Penguins they walk!” Pointing to a picture of the penguin, Tyler said “wear boots outside!”

This month we had our teddy bear party week! All the children (including teachers) were able to wear comfy pajamas and bring their favorite teddy bear friend to school. The children loved making their special snack, too. We made pancakes and monkey bread! Yummy! When we served the pancakes, Louise said “Cancakes! Syrup!” Jenna said “Pancakes! Sticky!” Wyatt said “No syrup please! I don’t like it!” We asked them if they liked the pancakes and Jackson said “The syrup! Like the snowman!”

During the week, we talked about bears! During circle time, we sang”Teddy is Snoring” and “1, 2, 3 Little Teddy Bears.” Don’t forget we danced the teddy bear dance! That was their favorite! We read “Big Bear, Little Bear” and “Footprints in the Snow”. When asked what the polar bears were doing, Guillem said “Slide, picking rocks! And eat donuts!” Hannah sage said “swim water!” Sam S. said “polar bears are sleeping!” When we asked the little ones, “what do bears eat?” Juliette said “eating fish, apple juice!” Luke looked at us and said “polar bears take bath!” Max laughed and said “trees!” After reading the book “Jamberry”, Nicholas said “bear eat strawberry!”

The following weeks, we enjoyed the theme of Circus! We painted our playhouse like a circus tent and played with our gym! We practiced balancing, crawling through a tunnel, and with our help, tumbling! We read “Olivia goes to the Circus”, and “Under the Big Top”. We sang “I am a clown today” and “The circus on the bus”. When asked what animals Olivia saw at the circus, Vivienne said “Seals!” Matteo said “Bunny rabbits! They hop!” Krish said “At the circus, I saw a camel!” Dylan said “Panda!” Anna Sofia said “Elephant!” When we asked what they saw at the circus, Avila said “Clown!” Then pointing to his shirt, Carson said “Frog!” When asked what they can eat at the circus, Hannah B said “I cotton candy!” Jake said “Popcorn!”

Just a few reminders! Growing Tree is having the Valentine’s Day party on Saturday, February 11, from 10 am to 11 am. So please come and join us! Our classroom will be passing out Valentine’s Day cards to our friends on the February 13th and the 14th. So if you would like to participate, please bring 27 Valentine’s Day cards to share! Please remember NO candy please! Next month’s theme is Book Themes! Take care and see you soon!

NEWS FROM CYNTHIA AND BARB’S TWOS

January has been a very busy, fun month in our class! We have talked about animals that hibernate, made cute penguins and polar bears, and learned a lot of winter themed songs and fingerplays. Here are some of the highlights! One day at circle time, Miss Cynthia talked about how bears hibernate in a den, frogs and toads go deep in the mud, and ducks and geese go flying south. Bella then yelled out “I like to hibernate with my mommy!” Another fun conversation was about my shoes. Grant looked down and pointed to my shoes and said “Miss Barb, I love your shoes!” Reese said “Look at MY shoes! They sparkle and light up!” Ellen than wanted everybody to notice her shoes, and she told us “They are nice warm brown boots.” When circle time is over, we often see Eloise sitting in our teacher chair conducting her own circle for her friends! Quite a crowd of kids gather around, and sing along with her. It is very cute!

Dylan couldn’t have been more excited this month, when Cynthia brought in her CD from the Cars movie. As soon as it started to play, he ran around the room telling everyone “It’s Lightening McQueen, its Lightening McQueen!!” The car/train table continues to be a big draw especially with the boys, as is the art table. Leah is our expert finger-painter, and Luke loves to paint anything that is put out!

Our annual P.J. party was a big hit. Clara Shei couldn’t wait to come to school and have what she called ” a pajama pancake birthday party!”. She made sure that we put syrup on her pancakes, too! Grant told us that he loved the chocolate chips in the pancakes! Nolan wore his Thomas P.J.s and brought in his stuffed Thomas to match, and Max was very excited to bring in his toy Curious George. He set George on a small chair, and gave George a book to look at, while he sat next to him with his book!

Although the days have been chilly outside, the kids still like (and need) to go out and play. Sofia and Annelise cooked up a great “cherry pie” in the sandbox, and proudly brought it over for me to taste – Thanks girls, it was delicious! Will decided to whip something up, too, and baked me a wonderful “carrot cake”. Very yummy

We will start off February learning about insects, and then Valentine projects, and will end the month at the circus! It should be another fun-filled time for all.
Dates to Remember: Valentine’s Day Class Party: Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th.

Parents, please have your child bring in 17 unaddressed cards that are signed with their name to pass out to their friends. Please DO NOT include candy with the cards.
We will have a sign up sheet out the week before, if anyone would like to bring in a treat for either of the days.

School Valentines Day Party is Saturday February 11th from 10am- 11am. Please come and be part of the fun.

It was wonderful seeing everyone’s smiling face upon our return to school last month. We feel the holiday break did wonders to refresh and revitalize us all. Spending time with family and loved ones certainly put things into perspective and showed us what’s really important.

To help us get settled back in, your children shared some special wishes they had for their families. Addison explained, “We could color pictures together.” Bobby told us, “I wish we could look at the sky at night.” Bowie shared, “We’d go to the airport and get Grandpa.” while Grace B. added, “My family would play soccer together.” Riley exclaimed, “We would swim in the ocean.” Sloane declared, “We’d play with fairies and ponies,” and Sonal stated, “We’d go to the zoo to visit the pandas and feed them bamboo shoots.”

We spent January discussing the animals, native people and environments of the Arcticand Antarctic. While imagining what it would be like to live in the Arctic, the class had many creative ideas. Brody would “go fishing and wear warm hats” while Cade informed us, “I will ride the polar bears.” Eddie stated, “I’d play in the snow and build a snow dinosaur with three claws.” Frankie said, “I would eat salmon with my family.” Grace Olivia commented, “I would live in an igloo with my family. We would have a fire and blankets to stay warm.” Jackie would spend her days “building snow people by my igloo,” while Jefferson imagined “swimming in the ocean with my family and having fun.” Brrrr!! Kylie shared, “I would like living in the Arctic with my whole family. We’d build a fire to keep warm.” Lucy added that she’d spend her days “looking for snow ducks” while Max would “look for seals and bears.” Nolan offered, “I would build a snowman with Reed.” Olivia contributed, “I would go sledding on the hill with my family.” Thomas announced, “I will play with the polar bears and wolves. I will be a fast runner.” We talked extensively and had many projects about the animals including the beluga and orca whales, arctic hare, snowy owl, polar bear, penguin and even the narwhal. Lola explained, “I like the orca because I can swim with it and Ariel.” Rocco commented, “The puffin is cute and has a colorful nose.” Sevan added, “Penguins are nice. They’re black and white.” Shawn told us, “I like the bunny because it’s bouncy and eats carrots,” to which Zayden added, “I like the snowy owl because it flies.” During this busy month, we also created mukluks and beautiful snowflakes with an additional project of building an igloo using miniature marshmallows (always a favorite since it involves tasting the sweet treats). During “P” week, we relaxed in our pajamas and enjoyed a pancake snack. Toward the end of the month, we celebrated Chinese New Year by learning about some traditional festivities; honoring the Year of the Dragon by creating a red, paper dragon; and experiencing fortune cookies.

Please check our boards for your children’s art. We hope you enjoyed the mittens and polar bears posted this past month.

February will bring discussions about healthy bodies and good nutrition; favorite authors including Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle and Don and Audrey Wood; and , of course, valentines. Please plan to attend the school Valentine’s Party on Saturday, February 11th, from 10-11 AM. A good time is always had by all. We will have our class celebrations the following Monday and Tuesday (the 13th and 14th). Please send in 28 valentines with your child on one of these days. We are requesting that you do not send candy. If there’s a special treat you want to send, you may discuss it with us.

Happy February to All!

NEWS FROM VICKI, KAREN AND MEGHAN’S THREES

January started with the smiles and excitement of the children as they came back to see friends they hadn’t seen during winter break. Everyone seemed eager to be back and the room was filled with smiling faces and happy voices. We hope everyone had a good winter break and are ready to start a new year.

We started January learning about the zoo. We know we need to follow the rules in a zoo because that is what keeps us safe and keeps the animals safe. “I know not to scream at the cages because they might run away and I know they have a zoo keeper and he keeps the animals,” said Mason. “You’re not spost to pet them ‘cause you just can’t pet them ‘cause he would bite you,” Madeline C. warned us. “You see animals there and I like the giraffe,” Emily told us. “Giraffes have long necks,” added Jackson. “And giraffes eat from the trees,” continued Madelaine B. “I saw baby giraffes and big ones and I went on a bus at the zoo and I went on the choo choo train,” said Piper. “I like to ride on the merry-go-round and I saw the giraffes and I went with my Grandma and I got to brush the sheep, but not the goat,” Ella told us. “Elephants eat lots of food and they actually eat hay,” Gabriel informed us. “I pet elephants and I pet warthogs and at night there’s just lights ‘cause the animals are asleep except the lions are not asleep,” Ana told us. “At the zoo I played on the big spider rope and petted the elephant,” said Walker. “Tigers, they have short tails and they chase animals and people,” continued Preston. “I never went to the zoo and I’d like to see a lion because I have the movie of The Lion King,” said Grace.

We went from learning about zoo animals to learning about dinosaurs. “A long time ago there were dinosaurs and then they were dead and then there were people,” Jackson explained to us. “They lived a long time ago and they walked and made foot prints,” Claire told us. “They walked and they flied and they were alive a long time ago,” continued Billy. “They are big and I don’t like them,” Marco told us. “Dinosaurs are big and strong and they eat meat,” explained Henry. “And they eat plants,” added Juliana. “Dinosaurs eat food and meat,” agreed Ryan Elizabeth. “Dinosaurs roar and dinosaurs have two bumps and some dinosaurs fly,” Lauren told us. “They have big foots and big claws,” continued Melissa. “Sometimes they rest and they stomp and they roar,” added Estella. “Dinosaurs can grow bigger just like giants, but giants can grow bigger,” thought Crosby. “I like dinosaurs like T rexs that growl,” Nicholas told us. “I like baby ones ‘cause I like babies and they’re cute,” said Joey. “I saw some big bones like dinosaurs,” Kalei told us. “I like to make dinosaurs and we went to the museum to see them,” said Paxton. “I watched them on TV with Clifford the dog and we found big dinosaur bones on TV,” Olivia explained to us. Learning about dinosaurs is always fun and exciting, but I think we all agreed that we were glad they lived a long time ago and not now.

We spent a fun week pretending to be circus performers. We put on clown makeup and walked on a tight rope. It’s fun being part of the circus. “There’s clowns and they’re silly and we made circus tents,” Tori told us. “The clowns do funny things and we painted our faces to be a clown,” added Emma. “Yesterday I went to the circus with my Mommy and Daddy and I saw the clowns and I had ice cream and I had dinner with the clowns,” said Annalise. “There’s silly circus clowns and we were walking on the tight rope,” remembered Thatcher. “I was walking on backwards,” Melissa told us. “I fell off and I was walking forward,” lamented Ana. “I was walking on the tight rope with my hands out and I didn’t fall off,” added Nicholas. Pretending to be part of the circus is fun for everyone.

Gung hay fat choy! We enjoyed putting on our Chinese New Year dragon parade and were happy to see everyone who came to help us celebrate. 2012 is the year of the dragon and we hope it is a great year for everyone.

We are looking forward to February and all the Valentine celebrations. The Growing Tree Valentine party will be held on Saturday, February 11, from 10 AM to 11 AM. There is face painting, cookie decorating, making necklaces, making cards and be sure to have your Valentine pictures taken. We hope to see you all there. Our class parties will be held Monday and Tuesday, February 13 and 14. There are flyers in cubbies with information on the class parties and how many children come on those days. There is a signup sheet on our door for volunteers to bring plain sugar cookies for the children to decorate and frosting for the cookies. We ask that there be no candy in the valentines please. Each of the children decorated a Valentine card to be sent home through the mail so be sure to be watching for it. And have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

February calls to mind, Valentines, love and Family. Just to liven things up we have thrown in themes such as Construction, Dr. Suess and Arctic Animals and Teddy Bears.

All the children were invited to bring in their favorite teddy bears. At circle time, we talked about what bears ate, their habitats, and habits. At snack time, the bears sat on their laps and shared fish and ants (goldfish and raisins.) Theo started singing, “Three little bears jumping on the grass. He fell off and fell in the river.” Lucas responds, “Hey, my bear likes to fish in the river. He is going to eat salmon.” Kaila says, “My bear doesn’t like ants. Well, maybe red ants. They could be cranberries.”

Arctic animals included polar bears. Hannah told us, “Daddy polar bears don’t stay with the babies.” I asked her why. “Because they go to work,” she responded. “Polar bears don’t work, Hannah,” says Kieran. “Polar bears hunt for their food. They don’t need money.” “Yea,” says Erin. “Cuz their not people. They don’t go to the store.” Luke adds, “They find their food in the water. Like seals.” “Well I know that polar bears have twins. I have twins, Annabelle and Charlie,” says Avery S. “Me, too,” says Alison, “Sam and Luke.” “They are called cubs,” says Oliver. “And have you seen their nose. They have a big black nose,” says McKenzie. “They cover their nose with their hand, no I mean their paw so they can hide,” says James. “How about the penguins. The daddies always take care of the babies,” says Gracie. “And the mommies go for the food,” says Abigail. Pre-K has quite intelligent conversations.

Everyone enjoyed the Construction Theme. Some of the girls thought that only boys used tools. “Girls don’t use tools. Boys are stronger.” said Natalie. All the boys agreed with her. I told them that I use tools all the time at home. Then I read a book called the “Handy Girls.” It explains how a group of girls go around the neighborhood and fix things. It definitely gave the girls a different perspective on the use of tools.

As Valentine’s Day draws near, we would like to ask you to bring in a medium sized cereal box and 36 cards with only your child’s name written on the back. It makes the card exchange much simpler. We also ask that no candy be attached due to the fact that some children have severe allergies. Please bring them in the first week of Feb. Remember to celebrate The Growing Tree Family Valentine’s Party with us on Saturday Feb. 11 from 10am to 11am. See you there.

V.I.P’s this month were Gracie, Caroline, James and Mackie. Thanks for all the goodies. Your children love to have you visit. And we love it as well.

NEWS FROM LAUREEN AND MANAL’S PRE-K

Happy New Year! It’s very exciting coming back after the winter break. We have been looking forward to seeing all those bright smiles! Everyone was so excited to see each other. There were many themes we explored in January, including Nursery Rhymes, Fairy tales, Construction, and Winter Animals such as Penguins and Bears. We talked about real bears as well as our pretend bears. Everyone got to bring their teddy bears to circle time and introduce them to their friends in class. All the children are doing really well, showing their patience and sharing. During our “Bear Week”, or as we like to call it, “Janubeary”, we asked the children to answer the question: Why I like Bear Week? The following are some of their adorable answers:

Nina: I love Fluffy. He sleeps with me at night. Sometimes I use him as an extra pillow.

Xavier: Winnie the Pooh has a smiley face. He eats breakfast with me. I give him Honey Nut Cheerios because he loves honey.

Jemima: I’m so happy I got to bring Pinky, my bear, with me to school.

Jacob: I liked the story, Corduroy, I’ll help him to find the button he lost.

Zach: This is my bear, his name is “Old Bear”. He plays with me all the time, and he is happy to be with me in the circle.

Raegan: I liked the bear puppet that we made in art. I got to play with him with my Grandma.

Jessy: When I go camping with my family, Mom makes sure that bears don’t eat our food.

Reid: I like bears, but I like baseball more. I went to the A’s vs. Giants game with my Mom.

Zubin: I liked the story, Corduroy, but he should put the other button back- “he can’t stay with just one!”

Ava: Marble paint is fun, “we got to shake, shake the box, then we got a yellow honey jar.”

Livia: My puppet lion, his name is just Lion. He goes to sleep with me.

Erin: That’s Cookie, my dog. I got him from McCaulou’s. I forgot my bear at home, then Cookie was in the car. I thought to bring him with me to class.

Sadie: Bears like to eat fish and they love honey. I love honey, too.

Tyler: Bears like honey. We painted a honey jar. This was fun!

Natalie: Bear is my favorite animal. They are big, like dinosaurs.

Luca: I got to bring “Speedy” my dog to school and show him that I can run fast.

Bianca: Bear week is fun, but I just like it when I see Max, my little brother, over the gate during our outside time.

February will bring a lot of fun and excitement as well. We are looking forward to Valentine’s day. We will be collecting empty cereal boxes for the kids to decorate in class to use as their mailbox during the Valentine’s party. Please send with your child his/her empty cereal box by February 7th. The children should bring 24 Valentines on Monday the 13th and 24 Valentines on Tuesday the 14th. These Valentines should be signed with their name only to distribute to their friends mailboxes during our special circle time. Please do not include candy in your Valentines due to allergies. We will be having our class party on these same days. We will discover all the monthly themes in various ways throughout the month. “Pajama Day” Pajama Pancake party for the letter ‘P’ is always a blast! It’s going to be the whole week of January 30th to February 4th. Please send a change of clothes for when the children go outside. We will also discover all kinds of facts from reading “Clifford the Dog”. We will also be challenged with opposites, sequencing, and colors through reading Dr. Seuss books. Rhyming will be explored with words like “The cat in the hat”. We will paint fish from “One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” and of course, we will enjoy eating our “Green Eggs and Ham”. We will also be writing about these stories and activities in our journals.

We are continuing our weekly work on the alphabet. When we split the children in two groups between Laureen and I, we work on our daily projects and realize how confident the children have become, especially in writing and pronouncing the sounds of each letter. The children have excelled wonderfully. Our alphabet sharing allows your child to practice their language skills in front of their peers.

Thank you to Zachary Pine, Zach’s dad, for coming to our class during construction week. He shared with the children his paper plans for the houses he built, and his bag and tool belt with all the different kinds of tools. Please sign up on the calendar for your special VIP day. Any parent who would like to come in to talk to us about their profession or hobbies are always welcome, as well as all family members! In March we will be going “Around the World”. If you have a country you would like to tell us about, please let us know! Also, if you would like to be a guest reader at 12:25 pm, sign up on the parent calendar. This is a good opportunity to share some of your children’s favorite stories.

NEWS FROM APRIL AND MITZI’S T-K

Happy New Year to all our T-K families! Everyone was so excited to see each other after our winter break and get back to the classroom fun! The children were filled with exciting stories to share about their holidays. While discussing the closing of the year, we discovered during calendar time that we are in the new year of 2012. We celebrated outside with vinegar/baking soda “fireworks” and the entire class was so excited! We even talked about New Year’s resolutions and learned more about our friends:

In the year 2012:

Ryan wants to learn how to play tennis…

Edgar wants to go to Tahoe and ski more…

Sofia wants to learn to read…

Gaetan wants to visitPhiladelphia…

Reed wants to become better at skateboarding…

…and Mia exclaimed, “I’m just so excited to hold my new baby!” (Her family is expecting a little sister for Mia soon!)

We had so much fun this month with our winter themes. We learned all about polar bears. It was so funny when Luke figured out how big a polar bear is and announced, “They are as big as 5 of my dads put together!” We also had fun sharing our very own special teddy bears from home on Teddy Bear day. Our bears even picnicked with us at lunch time! Our art project was a big hit as the kids all got to make clothes and dress their hand-made bears. While stuffing the bears with tissue Tyler exclaimed, “This is so cool! I want to stuff more things!” Teddy Bear week was also extra special during our math time when we counted, sorted, and graphed gummy bears…and then got to eat them! See…math really can be such fun!

Oh, and don’t forget all our excitement talking about penguins. We did many activities including learning sequencing patterns with penquins. The kids were very animated talking about all the special qualities penguins possess, and Gina was so adorable when she said “They get married just like mommies and daddies!” We had a special guest one morning who read all kinds of interesting facts about penguins to us and then helped us make our own penguins. This project was especially great because the kids really had to use their listening skills and follow many cutting and folding directions. They were awesome!

The children were so cute in our “5 Little Snowmen Fat” skit. They all wanted to play the part of the Sun and make the 5 snowmen melt! They loved wearing the hat “props” and singing the little song, laughing all the while. AfterMadison’s turn being one of the snowmen she proudly announced, “I shook my booty!”

Our class enjoyed a special field trip this month as well. We attended St. Mary’s College theater performance of “Hansel and Gretel”. Everyone was on his best behavior and the kids were terrific audience members. They loved seeing a live performance. Right away Abby asked, “When can we go again? That was just the best!” We wrote in our journals the following day about each child’s favorite part about the trip and many of them couldn’t choose one specific thing because there were too many!

We have also had so much fun just “catching up” with the class and hearing how everyone spent their winter holiday. We have written quite a bit about our favorite holidays and what makes them so special. It was heart warming to hear so many of the kids agree that it was their families that made everything so special. They shared all kinds of memories. This was a perfect transition for us to talk about traditions and how important they are in our lives. We brainstormed all kinds of family traditions and wrote about our favorite ones. The children’s writing skills have come so far! They are forming their letters so well and are proudly writing words. What a joy to see their progression!

Your children’s dictation, drawings and excited chatter with one another all clearly reflect how much their families mean to them, so it is very fitting to begin February with the themes of love and Valentines! We will also be celebrating the 100th day of school, and our last two themes of the month will be Presidents and Pets. We will be going on a field trip to Tony LaRussa’s Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF) on Thursday, February 23 to learn about pet responsibility and safety.

IMPORTANT DATES AND INFO:

Please bring 23 SIGNED (but not addressed) valentines (21 kids + 2 teachers!) to school NO LATER THAN Monday, February 13 to insure that all friends will get their valentines. We will be having our Valentine exchange and celebrations on Monday, February 13 and Tuesday, February 14 in the class.

DUE TO ALLERGIES: PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE CANDY IN YOUR VALENTINES.

The Growing Tree Valentine’s party will be held on Saturday, February 11 from 10:00-11:00. This is a special gathering for children and parents to enjoy games, activities, and treats. We hope all families can attend!

Hope your Valentine’s Day is filled with lots of hugs and kisses!

Ms. Mitzi and Ms. April

Director’s Message

Dates to remember:

December 19 – January 2, 2012: winter break, no school

January 16: Martin Luther King Day, no school

February 11: Valentine Party 10:00-11:00

February 17 and 20: Presidents’ Days, no school

March 5-9: Registration for all currently enrolled families

March 19-23: Registration for all new families

April 2-6: Spring break, no school

It’s hard to believe, but come January, registration for next year will be just around the corner! Registration for existing Growing Tree families is March 5-9. This is your opportunity to enroll in the days of your choice on a first come basis prior to our acceptance of any new families! Registration forms will be put in your child’s cubby prior to registration. Our Tots and Young Twos classes have been combined into “Tots ‘n Twos” with an age range of 20 mos. to 2.4 years. Children turning two before September 1st will go on to the Young Threes the following year, while children turning two after September 1st will move on to the Older Twos class. The age ranges listed for all classes this year have been coordinated with the changing kindergarten age ranges. We will continue to monitor the local school districts’ policies in this area so that our programs continue to coordinate with the public school system.

The holidays are upon us and your children are feeling the excitement of the season! They love sharing their family traditions – We get to hear all about the different grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins that they get to spend time with over the holidays!

Besides family, we are always thankful for our friends and celebrated with our annual “friendship soup” the week of Thanksgiving. The children were pretty evenly divided between those who wouldn’t even try it and those that at least asked for a bowl. Then there were the few adventurous among us that even asked for seconds. Of course, like so many traditions, the preparation and anticipation were the best part! Everyone was so excited about bringing in and cutting their vegetable, and even if they wouldn’t eat it, they loved to point at the soup and exclaim, “There’s MY vegetable!”

Now that the school year is well underway, we love to watch the shape that friendships take at different ages. While the twos often play happily together, they haven’t quite gotten the whole cooperation thing down yet. If someone has a toy that they want, they simply grab it and run. The threes understand the ideas of sharing and cooperation…at least in concept. If they want someone else’s toy, they still grab it and run but at least they wait until the teachers aren’t looking. The Pre-k and T-kers understand that at this point, cooperation and sharing are really expected of “the oldest “ Growing Tree children and no one wants to be accused of not being a good friend. As a result, many long debates ensue about just WHO wasn’t sharing or WHO wasn’t taking turns. The good news is they all understand that sharing, cooperation and being a good friend are valued traits and they’re all working very hard to get there…aren’t we all!.

We wish you, your family, and your friends a wonderful holiday season filled with fun and loving memories!

NEWS FROM EVELYN, SENIA AND BEV’S TWOS

The weather is getting cold… but inside our room the children’s smiles are warming up the environment . It is nice to see how much they are learning, and how they have been perfecting some skills and developing new ones. This past month we had fun talking and learning about the five senses and body parts. We played with magnifiers, which according to RYAN “makes everything bigger”. We played with different color palets, we learned about different textures, we smelled different scents, and the kids had fun sharing their experiences with us. When we talked about our eyes, we asked them, ” What can you see with your eyes?” DYLAN, taking a look around, answered,” I see a book.” VIVIENNE answered, “Fish”; of course, we know she likes fish! LUKE told us, “I see my shoes.” How about your hands? What can you do with them? MAX knew the answer,” We hold cupcakes with our hands and eat them.” “And we can play instruments with our hands, and play with cars,” added SAM V. KRISH knows that “with our feet we can march”, and JULIETTE added that we can ” jump and dance”. ANNA SOFIA added, “dance Hot Potato!” SAM S. wanted us to be quiet ” Shhh…” he said while he touched his ear, “I hear the dolphin splashing the water.” We all enjoyed our Friendship Soup; the kids had fun looking for the veggie that they brought from home. TYLER got so excited when Miss Senia pointed to his potato in the soup. HANNAH B. pointed to the soup saying ” I don’t see apples” and after a short pause she added, ” I know… I see apples at my house.”

We talked about winter and the changing season: “The trees are red,” said JENNA. “Seasons are changing to red,” added MATTEO, “The trees are red at home, too.” What do we need to wear in winter? ” Hats and Jackets,” said HANNAH SAGE and added, ” I go to snow.” They had so much fun talking about winter clothes and dressing up our little flannel friend with warm clothes. We also learned how important it is to brush our teeth every day. Next month we will be talking about winter animals and hibernation. Don’t miss our TEDDY BEAR PAJAMA PARTY week, details to follow.

Don’t forget: School will be closed for winter break from December 19 to January 2.

See you in the new year!

NEWS FROM CYNTHIA AND BARB’S TWOS

This past month was a great month of exploring for the children. They loved painting in fall colors, creating different harvest art projects and observing the changing of the trees. When mixing colors one morning during circle, Bella expressed, “The colors are so pretty.” Grace and Reese excitedly pointed out the colorful trees as they ran around on the playground. During circle, Jocelyn said, with a big smile, “The trees are so pretty! They are red and orange now!”

The aroma of vegetable soup filled our room. Grant was especially happy to try it, and happily expressed how “yummy” the soup was as he picked around the vegetables to get to the pasta. Anisha enjoyed the cornbread we made with the soup so much that after she was done said with a big smile, ‘That bread was yummy bread!” and Sierra responded, “Yes it is!”

The children get very excited when we ring the bell in the morning for circle time. Aria and Aida often attempt to ring it themselves! Pierce and Luke run over to pull out the carpet squares, while Avery sings the “make a circle” song to get us in the mood. Emery likes to sing the “clean up” song and direct traffic towards the circle. Dylan and Griffin always try to find a way to sit together for circle and often walk hand-in-hand over to sit as Jonah hurries over to sit next to his sister, Ellen. Jeffrey loves to say his colors and Max sings all of the songs with a BIG smile on his face.

Free choice is a great time to observe the children at their best. As they have settled into the school year, they all play so well together now. One morning Annelise, Will, Gus, Sofia and Sam were putting on their own circle. They had pulled out the carpet squares, and all of the children were sitting while Gus read a story to them. ~ Too cute!

Liam loves to place the cars in the cart and push them around the room while Nolan pushes the trains on the table yelling ‘Choo-Choo’! Eloise makes dinner for everyone in the playhouse and puts the babies to bed.

Art has a great following in our room. From painting to gluing, all of the children have their favorite activities. Clara Shei and Leah really enjoy coloring and painting, especially at the easel. Trent sat so calmly just running the brush strokes up and down his ‘canvas’ and said, “My grandma is going to love this.”

Time seems to be passing by so fast as we move into the holidays and a new year. Our moments with the children are truly cherished as we watch them grow. Their brains are like sponges as they soak up information so quickly. Our next month will focus on friendships, hibernation, as well as introducing facts about winter animals. Be prepared for some great new art projects as well as our annual teddy bear pajama party.

As the weather gets colder, please remember to label your child’s jacket with their name. This makes it much easier for the teachers, as well as any confused children, when it comes time to go outside. We will also be going through all of the ‘changes of clothing’ and sending home any ‘summer’ outfits so that you may replace them with warmer clothing.

Have a great Holiday Break!

The children are growing, their minds alight with thoughts and feelings, expression comes in many forms. The children develop an awareness and respect for all. Sonal sweetly offered a place to her pal Riley. Zayden generously allows each pal to touch his special sharing. Bowie brought us all to giggles, “Please do not be fussy! Just be nice!”. Olivia reminds us, “Everyone will get a turn!”Sloane patiently calls each peer to guess her sharing, acknowledging each with a smile. Nolan and Brody help energize us. Jackie told us, “It is sunny, but it is cold, Brrr!” Thomas added, “the clouds are making us cold!”We then practiced our sign language to communicate cold. All of the children enjoy learning to use sign language to tell about the weather. The changing of the seasons promotes many different learning opportunities as we take our nature walks. Our topics, The Native Americans and the Early Settlers of America, brought alive a sense of how different life was for people who lived long, long ago. Cade and Kylie were excited as we found a large acorn tree, Cade told us, “We can find a lot of food here.”Kylie guided everyone, “We have to cook it first!”The children all were amazed to touch and to hold the acorns, Addie alerted us, “Squirrels eat those!”We had a lesson on the way the early people gathered and grew their food.
We searched for ways to make shelter and we observed some of the natural lavender and rosemary plants flowering in the garden, Max told us, “My Mommy has this as we smelled the lavender.”, Sevan smelled the rosemary, then smiled, ” It smells, my Mommy makes dinner with it.”Noah and Robert found the big Redwood trees, ” We could sleep over here.”Robert told us. Noah added, “It is cold. You need a blanket!”Shawn excited said, “I have a lot of warm blankies!”. We have found the children are able to learn about our history through our hands – on science experiences.
Our Friendship soup taught the children the pleasures in preparing food with friends.
Rocco was so excited, “I am going to help you guys, Okay!”Eddie was thrilled to help stir the cornbread dough, “It smells so sweet, Miss Sandy!”.Robert, Lucy, Grace Olivia E., Lola, and Jefferson along with a couple of big girl helpers spent the whole morning preparing the veggies. , We see the future chefs of their families. The children were dear as we shared our feelings of thankfulness for all we have. This season our topics include . . . Family Traditions, Winter time foods, Teddy bear party, Winter Solstice.
In January we will begin our study of the Arctic and the Native people, animals, and environment. We will learn about the life in the Antarctic. We look forward to continuing our language lessons, math practice, math games, geography, history, science, dance, music and the sharing experience.
The circle of family that surrounds each child is the foundation upon which they grow and evolve, our lessons and discussions about family traditions evoked their wonderful thoughts.

NEWS FROM VICKI KAREN AND MEGHANS THREES

November has been such a busy month in the older threes class. We spent the first week learning about fall and decorating our room with fall projects and colors. “The leaves are kind of different and they’re kind of different and they’re kind of green and yellow,” Melissa observed. “All the trees get cold ‘cause it gets colder,” continued Lauren. “All the leaves fall and then we can collect them,” said Estella. “And there’s things that just turn different colors like leaves,” added Piper. “We can collect leaves and they fall down the trees,” Ana told us. “The leaves fall down and they’re orange and yellow and purple,” added Emily. “There’s purple on the trees and yellow,” agreed Maddie. “There’s purple leaves and yellow leaves,” explained Grace. “And the leaves change colors like purple and blue,” agreed Paxton. “We collect leaves ‘cause we need to give it to the class down the hill, ‘cause they changed colors,” Gabriel told us. “Leaves fall down and the leaves fall on the ground and in three more days then it’s Thanksgiving,” said Ella. “And when it’s winter the fall’s done,” Madeline finished up.

We learned about the pilgrims and how they lived a long, long time ago. “They sailed around on the boat to America,” said Tori. “The pilgrims were alive a long time ago and nobody was alive then when the pilgrims cut down the trees because it was a long time ago and just the pilgrims were alive then,” Marco told us. “They had tree houses from the forest and they get the wood from trees,” said Billy. “There’s apples in trees,” remembered. Kalei. “They chopped down trees to build a house with logs,” explained Annalise. ““They didn’t have a house and they had to build a log cabin,” agreed Jackson. “I just think it would be a little too hard to build a house and you need some wood,” thought Emma. “They could build a stove and a house,” said Olivia. “But they didn’t have no food,” worried Preston. “They look for food in the woods,” remembered Ryan Elizabeth. “They cook in the fireplace ‘cause they don’t have any stoves and they showed it to us to have popcorn,” Madelaine told us. “There’s no restaurants so they have to find something in the woods and cook in a fireplace because there’s no stove,” agreed Claire. “Pilgrim girls can’t wear pants. They wear long skirts and the hats are not construction hats,” explained Nicholas. “They wear funny hats and a long skirt and stockings,” agreed Henry G. “We make a house with graham crackers and cream cheese and logs and the logs were the pretzels,” remembered Joey. “I like the Pilgrims ‘cause I like to make the log cabins,” Mason told us. “The log cabin was yummy,” agreed Crosby. “And we were shaking a jar ‘cause there’s something in it that we need to make and make butter,” added Thatcher. “The jar, we were shaking it and it will be butter, but we will buy it really and cook it and put some sugar in it and some sausage in it and it will be good for you and you will eat it and grow up tall,” thought Juliana. “And we made popcorn from edemame,” Jake told us (we made popcorn from dried corn kernels, but they may have looked a bit like edamame).

We spent a very fun week learning about community helpers. We know that community is just a big word that means the area where we live, so community helpers are people who help us in our neighborhoods. Claire’s mommy, Mary Kay, told us about being a nurse and how nurses help us. Madeline Cooper’s daddy, Malcom, is a fire fighter and he told us all about how fire fighters help in our community. The librarian from Moraga came one day to read to us, do a puppet show for us, and sing with us. The veterinarian on our street, Dr. Kidd, came with a really nice dog named Spud to tell us what veterinarians to do help us help our pets. And two police officers came to tell us how the police help us. We thank everyone for their time and for helping us to have such a fun, interesting week and to learn about people in our community.

We all enjoyed our friendship soup, some by cutting vegetables, some by eating the soup and some by smelling the wonderful smells of soup cooking all morning. The soup was delicious and we thank everyone who brought a vegetable to contribute.

2011 is rapidly coming to an end, but before we leave for winter break there are still lots of good times to be had in the older threes room. Upcoming is a week of gingerbread fun, a week of learning about winter animals and a week of fun winter activities. We will continue to learn the name and sound of one letter each week, do more patterning, counting and practice the words we know in different languages. We can now say “thank you” in sign language, Swahili, Norwegian and Spanish.

The teachers in the older threes class want to wish all of you the merriest of holidays whether you are traveling to distant places or staying home to enjoy cozying in and relaxing. Enjoy the holidays with your very special children, and we’ll look forward to seeing everyone back at Growing Tree in January.

NEWS FROM PAT, TONIA AND NIKKI’S PRE-K

Happy Holidays! We cannot believe how quickly the year is flying by! We are definitely in our routines and very comfortable with one another here in Pre-K!

We started off November learning about Harvest, and what Harvest means. The children were very receptive and knew that “after Halloween, comes Thanksgiving!” We were discussing our Thanksgiving plans and some kids shared with the class. Isabella offered, “We’re going to my grandma’s because my mom doesn’t know how to make turkey. She lives in Pebble Beach.” Gracie said, “We’re just staying home and my Aunties are just coming over.“ Arnav added, “I don’t do nothing. I don’t eat Turkey because I’m Indian.” And Avery W. chimed in, “I’m going toLodi and I get to sleep inLodi.” Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving, wherever you are going to be!

Along with harvest, we discussed cooking and traditions and what they mean to us. We also got to participate in Growing Tree’s “Friendship Soup.” Thank you for bringing in so many vegetables! Each child got a turn cutting up a vegetable. During lunch they were offered to taste some. We had some mixed responses, but it seems as if everyone enjoyed the spirit of our soup.

Next came dinosaurs! This is always an exciting unit! We learned the different types of dinosaurs, how many of our footprints would fit in a dinosaur footprint, measured with a tape measure how tall and long a T-Rex is, and designed our own REAL dinosaur egg and built a nest for it! We had a special guest, Natalie’s dad, Darren, came into our class and talked about an exciting find he discovered as a child in 1973. He unearthed prehistoric bones here inOrinda! Turns out they were not dinosaur bones, but from a bear that originated inAsia. That means thousands of years ago it had made it’s way toNorth America. The original bones are in a museum, but he has replicas of the four bones he found, and shared them with the class. Thank you, Darren!

Another unit we had fun discussing was SPORTS! The kids were invited to wear any sport jersey during the week. What a variety of sports the class is interested in! There were soccer, baseball, basketball, and football jerseys and we even had a Tour de France shirt! During ‘Sports Bingo’ the kids were sharing what sports they liked the best. Clarke was very enthusiastic about football: “I like to watch football and play football. I have two favorite teams – Cal Bears and 49ers. I’ve been to 49ers and Cal. My dad doesn’t play football, but he plays water polo.” Adrian added, “I like to watch Oakland and I went to a Raider game with my daddy.” Luke answered, ” I like lacrosse. I play atLake Tahoe. I play with my brothers.”

Katie added that she likes “basketball. It’s fun. I play at home.”

Erin replied, “I play swimming. I got a trophy for swimming. I’m a good swimmer.” Avery J. said, “In the summer I swim on a swim team at Moraga Ranch. I like Freestyle. I’m fast, but I didn’t win any races.” Oliver chimed in, “I like swimming. I swim, but I’m not on a team and I swim without my vest.” Lucas had to add to that, “I like to swim at my house. I just wear a swim suit. No floaties!” Avery S. said, “I like to swim at the lake.” And Olivia ended the swimming conversation with, “Actually, I don’t play swimming. I like to watch swimming on my TV at home.”

We will finish the month with Gingerbread and Winter Celebrations. We cannot believe it is almost 2012!

Thank you to our VIP’s – Adria, Avery S., Hannah, and Kaila. Happy Birthday!! We love to see all of the pictures about our friends on their VIP boards and, of course, we all love the yummy treats for snack!

A big THANK YOU to Oliver’s dad, Stephen, for coming in and reading to our class at the end of the day. If you would like to come and read the class a favorite story of your child’s, you are welcome to do so! Please let one of us know and sign up on our calendar.

Again, we cannot express how much fun your children are. We are enjoying every moment of it!

Happy Holidays!

NEWS FROM LAUREEN AND MANAL’S PRE-K

November has brought us some fun filled weeks of learning, playing, and exploring and just as all the leaves are changing, so are your children. They are bringing Manal and I so much pleasure. Manal and I are so pleased that all the children are so comfortable with school and enjoying it so much. They really are so caring and loving towards each other and are forming some wonderful friendships with their classmates.

The children are getting so independent–they are organizing themselves daily for a game of Duck, Duck, Goose. They love to change the words; sometimes silly things and sometimes opposites! The girls love to tap Princess, Princess, prince! The boys like scary words like Ghost, Ghost, Skeleton!

November proved to be a wonderful learning experience for us. During Dinosaur week, we traced and decorated Dinosaurs. We made a dinosaur skeleton out of spaghetti. We painted dinosaur eggs and made an edible nest! We also did lots of dinosaur puzzles and sorted colorful dinosaurs at the tabletop. Our theme of Fall and Nature had us looking for different shape and color leaves, creating a leaf mobile, making pumpkins with pumpkin seeds and raking the leaves in our playground to jump in. We had a lot of fun learning about nutrition and trying all kinds of new foods (some old favorites too!). All of us enjoyed participating in “Friendship Soup”, who knew vegetables could taste so good!! We also learned about each others families and traditions for the holidays!

During Sports week, the children wore their favorite shirt, hat or uniform to emphasize our theme. We enjoyed testing our skills on an obstacle course. We played catch with bean bags and practiced running the bases. During our cognitive time, we practiced writing our numbers by counting baseballs and measuring bats. We learned opposites by deciding what was an outdoor activity or inside activity. The children loved dressing up in all of our uniforms, helmets, gloves and even swim fins.

Our journal page for this month was what is our favorite game or sport:

We discovered that no matter what their favorite is…they like playing it or watching it with their mom and dad!!! Xander: likes Soccer because of the net; Caroline: says Go Bears Football; Zubin: likes football; Nikki: likes the Niners!; Jacob: likes to take tennis lessons when he is bigger; Jenna: likes Hockey; Erin: likes to watch Sean at Miramonte, he is really good!; Eav: likes the Niners; Xavier: likes Lacrosse, but doesn’t know how to play it; Sammy: Lacrosse!; Luca: 49ers or the Bears on TV; Jemima: Basketball; Natalie: Soccer, mom and dad love it; Reid: Hockey and Baseball; Ella: Football with Dad; Matthew: Football with friends; Nina: Baseball and Tennis; Livia: Tennis and football with dad; Mikaela: Football on TV; Carsen: Baseball to play and Hockey to watch with dad; Bianca: American Baseball on TV; Zachary: Soccer with Dad!

Alphabet Sharing continues to be an integral part of our Pre-K classroom. It allows your child to practice speaking in front of a group of peers while boosting their self-confidence. It really is a joy to see them get so excited about learning. Please refer to the sharing calendar to see when it is your child’s day and assist them in choosing the appropriate item for the letter of the week.

Lunch is also an essential part of our daily routine. We would like to support the children in becoming more self-sufficient at lunch. You can help too, by pre-opening some of the packaged items and using containers they can open/close by themselves, thank you! Also please check our coat rack. Many jackets get left each day. Please put names on anything that is brought to school.

Guest readers: If you would like to read to us, please sign up on our calendar. Guest readers read after lunch 12:20-12:35. If you have a hobby or profession you want to share with us, just let us know. We welcome all visitors to our class. Also we have our 2012 calendar if you would like to schedule your VIP.

December themes will be Winter holidays, Winter Fun, Gingerbread,Holidaytraditions and, of course, we will continue with our alphabet writing and sharing. If you would like to help us celebrate a holiday tradition or read us a story, just let us know. In January, our themes will be Polar Animals, Tool Time, Bears real and stuffed and Nursery Rhymes.

School will be closed December 19 – January 2, 2012 for our winter break See you in the new year!

NEWS FROM APRIL AND MITZI’S T-K

Fall is around us with winter just around the corner. The children are alive with the excitement the autumn and winter months have to bring. They have enjoyed creating festive Thanksgiving and winter holiday art to display in our classroom. The handprint turkeys came out darling! They have been especially busy creating a very special holiday gift for you, their families. It is amazing to see how much the children are capable of learning, and in such short time. It is hard to believe they have already become so well versed in almost half of the alphabet, including the sounds the letters make and many words beginning in each letter. The children are amazing at identifying so many words beginning in the letter we are focusing on each week, that we are hardly able to fit all of the words on our weekly chart! They have already learned three of our T-K chants in addition to many of the sight words associated with our chants. We are currently working on our Dec. chant, which focuses on the numbers 1-10.

The children are doing a wonderful job with their patterning and graphing skills – they have come so far. Their writing and drawing are really progressing beautifully. It is amazing to look back at the beginning of their Sept.-Oct. journals in contrast to the ending pages. They are such a bright group!

The class had great fun learning about Native Americans, especially how they used symbols to tell stories called pictographs. The children were so creative in putting together the different symbols to tell their own unique stories which we shared collectively. We also talked about the meaning of Thanksgiving with the children and asked them to tell us what they are thankful for…

Edgar: “ My sister.”

Gaetan: “My brother, Dante.”

Dylan; “My family.”

Max: “My home.”

Luke: “Life jackets.”

Tyler; “My bed.”

“So thoughtful!”

Friendship Soup was a great success! It is always a favorite activity amongst all of the children and teachers at Growing Tree. It is so lovely to walk in and smell that delicious aroma filling the entire school. I love to see the sense of pride and camaraderie the children experience when they bring a vegetable to contribute to our soup, and as they make such effort to carefully cut and prepare their veggies for our soup. Sofia whipped up our whole bowl of pumpkin corn bread all by herself! It was delicious, and went great with the soup! All of the children showed so much pride experiencing the finished soup, encouraging one another to try it. In T-K, since we are the “big kids” of Growing Tree, we encourage the children to at least take a small taste before deciding they do not like something. This was easier said than done for some, once all those floating veggies were spotted. It was so cute to hear the children coax one another to give it a taste! Yovela was one of the first to exclaim; “Uhm its good!” Nate suggested to the whole table, “Come on guys, we need to try it!” Reed was so funny! He finally succumbed to the peer pressure and said, “All right! I’ll try it!” Then he pinched his nose shut and took a tiny taste! Nicole excitedly said, “I see my green beans and parsley!” Nicklas added, “There’s my purple cauliflower!” Mia exclaimed, “Yum! I smell my onions and celery.” Madison added, “Ok I’ll try a tiny taste!”

We have had a wonderful time celebrating many Superstar days and birthdays over these past couple of months. It is always such a treat! We love learning new things about your children. For instance, we never knew Everett was so passionate about large earth moving machines. It was so cute when he showed the class his picture of a giant tractor “Mommy” took for him while visiting relatives saying; “Now I can see it whenever I want to!” Abby enjoyed showing us what a great big sister she is to Hannah. Abby shared how she loves to help “Mommy” take care of Hannah. Such a caring mini mama!. It was so fun to learn about Delaney‘s love of all animals, especially Dolphins, and that she wants to grow up to be a vet, adding; “I will take care of any animal”, “even bugs!”. Gina really cracked us up! Who would have known what a brave little player she is! She had no qualms about performing her dance routine for the class. Ryan did such an excellent job presenting his poster to our class. It was so endearing to see how proud he was to demonstrate all of our class “jobs” for his family. Ms. Mitzi and I really enjoyed the opportunity to visit with you, parents and family. And to give you a peek at the great work and strides your children are accomplishing. Our Super Stars really shinned! Mia, and Logan Celebrated their 5th. Birthdays with the class, and we look forward to their special Super Star Days….“Phew! November is a busy Birthday month for T-k!”.

In Dec. and Jan. we will focus on the themes of “Holidays Around the World”, “Families and Giving”, “Gingerbread”, and “Winter/Polar Animals & adaptations”.

Winter Break will begin Dec. 19 – Jan. 2. Please look for information on our upcoming field trip shortly after our return to school.

We hope you have a joyful Holiday filled with love and happiness. Enjoy your sweet little precious babes. We will think of them happily as we are enjoying our holiday as well.

Ms. April and Ms. Mitzi

Director’s Message

DATES TO REMEMBER:

November 11: Veteran’s Day (No School)

November 22 and 23: Friendship Soup Days

November 24 and 25: Thanksgiving Break (No School)

December 19 – January 2, 2012 Winter Break (No School)

January 16: MLK Day (No Schooll)

Listen! It’s so nice to hear all the laughter and animated conversation! No more crying! Everyone is adjusting so well to the Growing Tree routine! One of the most important parts of our day is “morning circle”. It’s a time to greet each other, stimulate our thoughts and senses, and set the tone for the day….

The Two’s have learned what circle time is all about and it’s so cute to see them toddling or running over (depending on their age!) to join the group. Many already have favorite songs and movement activities!

The Three’s circle times now include “jobs” and all the children have a new sense of importance now that they’ve been given these new responsibilities! The “Tapper” and “Weather reporter” are the most coveted jobs so far!

The Pre-Kers have the whole circle time thing down pat. They know what to anticipate and so their jobs must be much more challenging…they love figuring out the calendar pattern as well as choosing the weather sight word.

The T-Kers’ math skills are further challenged at circle time with weather graphing and line leader, who counts all the children going outside and, hopefully, counts the same number when coming back inside!

We loved seeing all of you at Growing Tree’s annual Halloween Family Fun House. Halloween is one of the children’s favorite holidays and their excitement is contagious! Fantasy and make believe, dressing up and becoming an entirely different entity – We loved meeting all of their alter egos!

We’re receiving fewer reports of problems in the parking lot – Thank you for respecting our request that you not park in red or yellow zones and that you are patient and courteous in the parking lot.

On November 22nd and 23rd, the children will prepare our annual Friendship Soup and take time to be thankful for all of our new friends. Most (…well, many!) of the children will at least try the soup, and can always point out the very vegetable they contributed!

We, at Growing Tree, are thankful for all of you, and we’re also thankful that everyone is happily settling into their Growing Tree routine! Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and to your families!

NEWS FROM EVELYN, SENIA AND BEV’S TWOS

Welcome! The children are now settled and are doing very well! They are getting used to the routine, and are now walking in with smiles and hugs! We have had lots of fun this month. During circle, we have been talking about harvest and farm. When we asked, “What is harvest?” Jackson said, “when you go to the garden and water your plants!” Ryan sat up and said “plants and oranges too!” When asked “What do farmers pick?” Louise said “pumpkin patch, pumpkin!” We read books about harvest and they learned how pumpkins grow! We sang, “One little, two little, three little pumpkins” and “Oh Mr. Sun.”

Farm was a fun theme to talk about. We sang Old McDonald and Three Little Ducks. When we asked the children what their favorite farm animal was, Juliette said “mine cow!” Nicholas said “piggy too!” Guillem smiled and said “like pig!” When we asked, “What does a cow give us?”, Alexis answered, “cow give milk and bacon!” When we asked about bees, Samantha said “give honey.” While we were explaining that chickens give us eggs, Matteo asked, “What about poached eggs? Where do they come from?”

When learned about farm animal sounds, Luke said “cow goes meem!” Carson pointed to the horse and said “neigh, neigh!” When it was time to dance, it was so cute to watch them move to the chicken dance. We also marched to the same song with instruments. Please, don’t forget to look at our picture board. We have new farm pictures of your little ones! We are noticing that the children are now playing with friends! Wyatt, while climbing the jungle gym, said to Avila “This is the highest mountain I ever seen!” Avila replied, “see mama, see mama!” We are looking forward to having more fun memories like these! The next theme is Fall, body parts, and five senses.

We wanted to mention how much fun we all had at the Growing Tree Halloween party! It was great to see you there! We would also like to remind you to bring a veggie for our friendship soup on November 22, and 23. We look forward to seeing you!

NEWS FROM CYNTHIA AND BARB’S TWOS

Pumpkins and ghost and bats, oh my! What a fun filled month we have had in our class! Annelise, Avery and Leah loved making tissue paper pumpkins, making sure that the whole pumpkin was covered. Will always sets his stuffed horsie next to him while painting, and Sofia is always excited for art, no matter what we are making!

Circle time is one of the highlights of the day! Our Halloween songs have become favorites to sing! Dylan and Griffin like to sit next to each other at circle time and “Stir the Brew” ( A part from one of the songs), and Gus always lets out a big laugh when we say “Boo” at the end of the songs!

The Halloween party was a big success! The kids loved dressing up in their much anticipated costumes. They all looked so cute!

We have had some warm sunny days this month, and were able to bring out the water table several times. Our water toys include very colorful fish and fishing poles. Reese was SO excited when she caught a big orange fish, she said “Look! I caught Nemo!” Nolan loved putting his Spider-man in the water! Liam prefers to find little cars and pretend they are floating on the water!

Outside play has something to offer for everyone. Trent has gotten really fast going up the climber, down the slide, then back up the climber again! Jocelyn and Jeffrey were having a great time the other day riding side by side in the coups. They were taking turns honking the horns and laughing, very cute! And of course the sandbox is the best place of all outside, everyone enjoys making (sand) birthday cakes!

We are continuing to practice learning our colors and shapes, and simple matching games. We are also learning to share, and take turns, which is not always easy when you are two! The kids know the routine now, when the bell rings, it’s time to clean up. While this is a challenge some days, we are making some progress!

In November, we will be learning about fall and mixing colors. We will talk about all the things we are thankful for, and will be making some wonderful colorful art projects.

All the classes will be participating in making a “Friendship Soup” on November 22nd and 23rd. Please have your child bring in one vegetable to add to our soup, if coming on those days. The children will all have a chance at tasting it at our snack time, and being downstairs, we will also get to smell it cooking!!

Let another fun month begin!

NEWS FROM SANDY AND SHARYN’S THREES

October has afforded your children the opportunity to help us settle into class. Their true personalities are showing and we’re discovering what wonderful little people they are.

We started the month discussing various modes of transportation. Our projects allowed us to review colors and shapes as we created school and city buses as well as fire trucks. We hope you’ve had a chance to look at the board in class to see the work on display. The children are very proud of their schoolwork and eager to share it with their families.

Me and My Community week allowed us to see where we fit in the community as well as construct a very basic map. The children commented on some of their favorite community places. Several of the children picked school as their favorite place. Addie said, “I like school because I do!” while Lola enjoys “doing the dances at Growing Tree with my friends, Miss Sandy and Miss Sharyn.” Shawn thinks “the Growing Tree school is lots of fun.” The fire station is also popular. Sevan explained, “I like to visit the fire station and look at the red fire trucks.” Rocco added, “The fire guys get out the hoses and put out the fire.” When Jackie visits, she likes “to go into the fire trucks and visit the helpful man.” Brody, Bobby and Zayden all prefer the police station. Brody declared, “The police officers are good!” Bobby added, “I like to get stickers there.” and Zayden offered, “I like to see the police officers, the police cars (they have computers) and police dogs.” Another fun place to visit in our community is the library. Max stated, “I get books at the library.” Grace B. told us, “I love to read books. Mommy and Daddy take me and my brother, Riley, to the library.” Grace Olivia also chimed in with, “My Mommy helps me pick out books at the library.” Riley couldn’t decide and said, “I like to visit everywhere…the library, the police station, Growing Tree School and the fire station. Nolan had his own idea and contributed, “My house is my favorite place. It’s where I play choo choo trains.”

While discussing community helpers, we were fortunate enough to have Dr. Christian Eirich spend some time in the classroom. He explained his doctor duties while reinforcing the belief that doctors are our friends. Thomas was so proud to have his dad speak to the class. We also had a visit from Melanie McCallum, the Moraga children’s librarian. She entertained us with her puppet, Dog, storybook reading, singing and bubbles. We’re looking forward to visits from Firefighter Mark (also known as Frankie’s uncle) of the Moraga FD and Officer Davis of the Moraga PD in the near future.

While learning our alphabet letter, “C,c for cloud,” we used our imagination to describe what our clouds looked like. Sonal remarked, “It looks like a butterfly,” while Jefferson thought his looked like “a bunny.” We definitely were going with the animal theme as Cade said, “Mine’s a stingray,” and Olivia added, “This is a big elephant.” Bowie saw “a bridge” in his painting. Frankie informed us his was “a bee in the forest with lions and trees.” Eddie had Halloween on his mind as he stated, “This is a scary skeleton! Boo!” Noah said, “Mine’s a rocket shooting in the sky.” Sloane described hers as “a square shaped cloud” while Kylie felt hers looked like “a storybook.” Thomas explained, “Mine’s a superhero.” and Lucy exclaimed, “See the crown!”

Halloween is always a favorite topic and one the children never tire of. It’s so fun to hear about who’s going to be what. It was wonderful to see so many families on the 29th who were able to participate in our school event. The children looked adorable in their costumes as well as on the 31st when we had our classroom celebration. Thank you to the families who made our party special by contributing the festive treats.

Our Sharing has begun and is a big hit. It’s thrilling to see the children up in front of the class presenting. They are so proud and so eager to share. Thank you for taking the time to help them choose their sharing !

Just a reminder to sign up for your child’s 1, 2, 3 Look at Me Day. This is their special day to celebrate being a member of your family and allows our class the opportunity to get to know the children and their families a little better. Just let the teachers know what date is convenient for you and we will see that it gets on the calendar. Thanks to the Bieber Family for starting us off.

November will bring discussions of the Early Settlers, Native Americans, Harvest, Fall and that classic favorite, the Thanksgiving Celebration. We will be preparing our annual Friendship Soup on November 22nd and 23rd. Please send a vegetable to school with your child on those days to contribute to the soup.

This is the time of year when we spend more time than usual reflecting on all we are thankful for and being grateful. We want you to know how thankful we are to you for allowing us to share your children.

We wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

It seems like the year has just started, but already we’re well into fall and starting to think about the winter holidays. The children have settled happily into the routine of our room, coming in with happy smiles, eager to play with friends. Ana and Annalise play happily with the dolls and the doll bed at the circle table, while nearby Joey, Piper and Henry G. are busy spinning on the spinners. Ella, Maddie, Claire and Melissa can be found in the playhouse, and on the other side of the wall, Thatcher and Nicholas are busily working at the tool bench. The play dough table is always a popular choice—Preston, Gabriel, Crosby, Estella, Mason and Ryan are sharing a conversation as they roll and cut the play dough. Tori and Juliana are building things with the round plastic puzzle pieces: “I made a snake,” said Tori. “And two baby snakes,” added Juliana. Now, almost two months into the year, we asked the children what they liked best about Growing Tree.

“I like to play outside and to play with Claire,” Melissa told us. “I like to play outside and play with lots of other things,” continued Emma. “I like to do the doctor stuff,” added Grace. “I like to play with Estella,” said Madeline. “I like to do jobs like weather helper,” Claire told us. “I like to sit next to Piper,” said Paxton. “I like to play with all my friends,” Ana told us. “I like jobs and I like line leader,” said Maddie. “I like to do jobs and I like tapper,” continued Annalise. “I like to do painting,” Lauren told us. “Playing on the swings,” continued Estella. “I like listening to stories and walking in the sand outside,” said Billy. “I like to run outside,” added Piper. “I like to play pirates with Walker,” Nicholas told us. “And I like to play pirates with Nicholas,” continued Walker. “I like to play with Maddie and Estella,” said Madelaine. “I like cheezits,” said Olivia. “I like the basketball,” Kalei added. “I like to read stories,” said Jake. “I like to paint,” Jackson told us. “I like to sit down by Ana,” Marco shared. “I like a job that’s tapper,” continued Emily. We all have favorite things to do at Growing Tree that help make school so much fun.

Halloween is one of our favorite holidays, in the older threes class. The children were busy all during October, planning their costumes and telling their friends what they would be for Halloween. We decorated the room with pumpkins, witches, ghosts, haunted houses and all things Halloween. We had lots of fun making our scarecrow and carving our Halloween pumpkins. We were happy to see so many friends at the Growing Tree Halloween party. There were so many wonderful costumes and a great time was had by all who attended. Halloween is such an exciting holiday and it’s so much fun to share it with all our Growing Tree friends.

November is a busy month as we head into the holiday season. We’ll start the month with fall activities and decorate our room with all the beautiful colors of fall. We’ll be learning about people in our community who help us, with visits from a police officer, a librarian, fire fighters, a nurse, and a veterinarian; we thank them for taking their time to share what they do to help in our community. We will also learn about the Pilgrims who came to America long ago and what it was like to live a long, long time ago without cars or stores or even stoves and microwaves to cook their food. We will continue to pattern and learn the names and sounds of the next letters in our alphabet. Our traditional friendship soup is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, November 22 and 23 and you’re invited to bring a vegetable to add to the soup. We wish you all a very happy fall/Thanksgiving season filled with all the beautiful colors and wonderful smells of autumn.

NEWS FROM PAT, TONIA AND NIKKI’S PRE-K

What an exciting year we are having. Pre K is going along very smoothly. Fall is here. October went by quickly. The weather was beautiful. Red, orange and yellow leaves covered the trees and fell on the ground. We made leaf mobiles, sponge painted leaves on trees and made dry leaf wreaths.

October was a month to explore our community. We made a BIG map with every child’s house on it. We talked about who lives in the neighborhood. We found the closest Fire Station to our home on the map and where to go for food, clothes, and how to get to Growing Tree.

We spent a week talking about Community Helpers.

On Oct. 20th, we had 2 Moraga Policemen, Officer Bob and Officer Randy, come and talk to the children about how to keep safe around Halloween time. They brought their police cars and let the children sit in the back seat if they wanted to. They had all the lights flashing and it was very exciting. Officer Randy left badges and pencils for the children. Policemen are our friends.

We also had Dr. Anthony speak to the children on Oct.21st. Caroline and James proudly introduced their Dad in his scrubs. He is a plastic surgeon. He talked about how important it is to keep hands clean so you don’t get germs on any boo boo’s you might get (scrapes or cuts). Thank you for coming to our class Dr. Anthony.

ON October 27th, Arnav’s Mom, Dr.Singhal, came to our class. She is an adult medicine physician at Kaiser Oakland. She talked to the kids about what it feels like being a doctor, what doctors do, different kinds of doctors and much more….!!! Thank you so much for coming.

Later in the week I asked the children what they would like to be when they grow up:

Trevor “I want to be a Fireman. I’d put out the fires. I’d use water from the hose. I need to exercise so I could use the heavy hose.”

Adrian “I want to be in the Army. I will drive an Army truck in the desert. It will be hot in the desert.”

James “I want to be in the army. I will carry a gun for protection.”

Kaila “I will be a tooth Dr. I would fix their teeth that are broken. I will clean the teeth and give them flavored water to swish around and get the sugar bugs out.”

Mackie “I am going to be a pirate – a good one- and fight the bad guys. I will sail the Seven Seas and look for treasure and all that stuff.”

Avery J. “I will be a teacher. I will teach Kindergarten kids to read and I will be a good Mom.”

Natalie “I want to be a VET and take care of animals. I like piggies.”

Lila “I want to be a Mom. I’d make dinner, play with my kids. I want 3 kids. We’d have movie night and watch movies like “Wash Away.”

Avery S. I want to be an Artist. I will write kids books about Princesses and Fairies and Angels in the Bible.”

Henry “Policeman. I will drive a police car. It will have a siren and I will use a cell phone to call the station. I’d catch any bad guys and take them to jail.”

Luke “I‘m going to be Francesco from Lightning McQueen, Cars 2. I like to race fast.”

Oliver “I’m going to be a Race Car Driver. I want a blue car that goes 160mph. I can’t drive that fast in Moraga because it is over the speed limit. I would go to the race track and race past the checkered flags.”

Erin “I want to be a Fire Girl. I will put out fires. I will use the hose. The hose is too heavy now but when I grow up it will be easy.”

Clark “I am going to be a Fireman.”

Caroline “I’m going to be a Mommy and have 2 kids and their Daddy will go to work. I will get coffee for my friend, Katie. Me and Katie will live in Hawaii and go to the water slide with all our kids.”

Katie “Yes, I want to be a Mommy, too, and go to Hawaii with Caroline. We made a deal to go together. We can go to Starbucks and drink coffee.”

Arnav “I want to be a “Trader” like my Dad. He trades stocks and sometimes stocks go down then they come up. He is learning all the time. Sometimes he put money in the stock market and sometimes he gives money to people. I think it would be fun being a trader.”

Halloween was “Oo oo oo” so much fun. The children made white ghosts, orange pumpkins and black cats. They loved singing the Halloween songs in class and fun was had by all at the school wide Halloween Party on Saturday.

We are continuing to work on one letter of the alphabet each week and to practice writing our names the new school way (one capitol letter and the rest small letters).

As we move into November, our themes will include Harvest, Dinosaurs, Nutrition and Cooking. We will be making “Friendship Soup” again this year Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Please bring in a veggie to add to the soup. Thanks.

Tonia, Nikki and I thank you for sharing your children’s lives with us. It is a joy to be part of it.

NEWS FROM LAUREEN AND MANAL’S PRE-K

The month of October started off the holiday season with a fun and creative time. Our month started with some great activities and educational visitors. The children continue to share their progressing skills while still having a chance to relax and enjoy themselves during the month’s Halloween celebrations.

In our explorations of farms and harvesting, the children cut and decorated pumpkins and used pumpkin seeds for counting activities. We learned about more fall themes through our nature walk in the school garden where the children could observe the colors of the leaves changing. We also learned about our community helpers and the different jobs they have. The children also colored pictures of their houses that we put up on our classroom wall. They enjoy looking for their homes and finding where their friends live as well.

We asked the kids what they like to do at school, and here is what they had to say: Luca: I like to play with the cars and run along with my friends. Caroline: The big ship is my favorite and I love coloring. Xavier: I like to climb the play structure because I have strong muscles. Reid: I like to shoot basketball and run with Zubin and Carson. Jessy: I like to play ‘Duck, Duck, Goose’ with my friends. Xander: I make mountains in the sand box. Jemima: I like to play with the princess and the ponies. Sadie: Reading books and going on the swing with Xander.

A special Thank You goes out to Nurse Caroline, Luca Vezzali’s “Nona”, for her time as our community helper this month. She shared with the children the importance of her job and how she makes her patients get well. A Thank You also goes out to officers Randy and Bob from the Moraga Police Department who were also community helpers this month. They shared with the children how they keep the community safe, and how the children can have a safe Halloween Trick-or-Treating.

Laureen and I would like to welcome Mikaela Mohan to our class. We are glad to have her in our group. We had our class Halloween party where the children came in with creative, scary, and, of course, adorable costumes. They had a wonderful time.

Joining with the rest of the classes, we also had a school-wide Halloween party. The party was full of fun times and games for the children to enjoy with their friends and families.

This month we began alphabet sharing during circle time. The children are showing great progress and improvement. We are seeing a tremendous boost in their confidence as they speak and share with their peers. Laureen and I are very pleased to see them improve and flourish.

The children are continuing to expand their skills. They are learning how to write their names and continuing to work on their numbers. They have been working in their journals that we keep in our classroom folders throughout the year.

We would like to thank Rachel Wallach, Jessica’s Mom, for coming to read to the class as our guest reader. The children love seeing a familiar face from home in the classroom. We encourage all parents who have the time to come and share a book with us.

November is going to be another eventful month. We will be exploring the ancient world of Dinosaurs. With the weather getting cold outside and time may be limited by the rain, we will engage the children with a fun month of sports and games and exploring the world of nutrition.

We would like to remind families that on November 22nd and November 23rd, we will have Friendship Soup days with the children. Please give your child their favorite vegetables to bring to class. We will spend the day as busy worker bees cooking up a warm treat.

Thank you,

Manal and Laureen

NEWS FROM APRIL AND MITZI’S T-K

Wow! October has been a fun and full month in our T-K class! We’ve had a wonderful time exploring Fall…learning about the season, creating colorful artwork, focusing on our letters and numbers in our journals, discussing spiders and bats, trees and leaves, and of course pumpkins and Halloween!

Performing our “Five Little Pumpkins” sing song skit was a highlight. Gaetan, Luke, Nicole, Sofia, and Niklas composed one of the amazing casts…they all laughed and chanted together “We love rolling at the end like round pumpkins!” Reed and Nate both loved their turn acting out the ghosts “run, run, running!” And everyone loves waving their hands in the air chanting “There are witches in the air!” Making pumpkin pudding was a favorite food activity. Abby wasn’t sure if she liked the “stinky smell,” and Dylan agreed it “was yucky,” while Madison exclaimed, “It smells like Febreeze…my favorite of all!” We must admit we saw almost everyone licking the bowl clean though!!

The kids absolutely loved stuffing our scarecrow, and Everett asked upon completion, “Do you think it’s a boy or a girl scarecrow?” We had several hilarious ideas for naming the scarecrow, including Gina’s “Mr. Flower Pot Head!” The verdict is still out!

We also went on our first fieldtrip to Clayton Valley Pumpkin Farm. The kids had a great time learning about the various types of pumpkins and even were able to grind their own corn. They were so cute picking out their own pumpkins and Delaney proudly said, “My pumpkin is just beautiful!”

Our annual Halloween party was a huge success. Everyone enjoyed all the “frightening fun” as they played games, received prizes, ate yummy treats, and admired each other’s costumes. This event puts a smile on everyone’s face, and we want to thank all of you for joining us.

Our T-K class is quickly becoming an exceptional “brainstorming” group during our cognitive circle time. They love thinking up new “A” “B” and “C” words and sounding them out. Logan chimed in…”C” words are cool!” Get it?! They are also having fun discovering numbers…when we were discussing “things that come in two’s, Ryan quickly exclaimed, “My sniffers!” (His nostrils!!)

We are also learning many color and sight words and we’ve learned about periods, question marks, and exclamation points. Yovela loves to put her arms up in the air and excitedly say any word with an exclamation point to show, “how it’s supposed to be said!” And Mia likes when we are writing our letters on the big board and we “Put on the brakes sound” to show the letter is done. We have also been busy reading our first four alphabet books as well as our October chant. The kids are doing a remarkable job recognizing new words, sentence structure and punctuation.

Our Random of Act of Kindness tickets are adding up. Max received a special ticket for cleaning up after snack time completely on his own, without even being asked. Edgar also received a ticket for being especially helpful to a classmate who needed assistance cleaning up after a painting project. What considerate and thoughtful children we have in our class!

Congratulations to our first Superstar, Liam! This was an especially great day for Liam as it was his 5th birthday as well. Did you know that Liam loves being Big Brother to his baby sister Pippa? Did you also know that Liam wants to be a police officer when he grows up?

As you can tell, we have had quite a busy and exciting October. As Tyler put it during Free Choice time…”Let’s get this party started!” The kids are truly enjoying their time in T-K!

In November we will focus on our themes of Healthy Habits, Harvest, Native Americans, and Thanksgiving. We will make ‘Friendship Soup” as an entire school, so don’t forget to bring a fresh vegetable to class on Tuesday, November 22 or Wednesday, November 23. We will send reminders!

Miss April and I are so thankful for our wonderful class and all the amazing families we get to share all the happy moments with. Thank you for giving us this precious time with your children.

Happy Thanksgiving!!
